The beauty of Flores resembles a rough diamond. A trip from east to west leads you along savannas and rain forests, terraced rice fields and majestic mountains. Villages with intriguing animistic ornaments intersperse with real monasteries, dating back to a time when missionaries spread the Christian word. A thin layer of western civilization is poured over a substantial animistic culture that left its mark everywhere. Everywhere you go, the finest ikat fabrics are being manufactured. As if these were not enough reason to visit, a string of islands between Sumbawa and West Flores are part of the Komodo National Park. This is the habitat of the Komodo dragon, a unique monitor lizard, existing nowhere else in the world.
